The rear door to this gas chamber at Birkenau was labeled: "Harmful gas! Entering endangers your life!" The words were for those who ran the gas chambers, not its victims. The prisoners' entrance labeled the chambers as a shower and was inscribed with a message about the virtues of cleanliness.

Prisoners at Auschwitz were used to build the Birkenau killing center. This picture shows crematorium IV, under construction. Early on, the victims of the gas chambers were buried in pits. As the pace of the killing intensified, the bodies were burned, first in the pits themselves and later in the crematoria. Construction at Auschwitz-Birkenau was continuous from the winter of 1941 through the summer of 1944.

The ovens for crematorium II in Auschwitz-Birkenau, like those in the first crematorium, were built by prison inmates. With a ready supply of labor and the confiscated wealth of European Jewry at their disposal, the Nazis had the necessary resources for their genocidal agenda.

July 21, 1942: Six hundred Jews remaining in Niéswiez, Poland, battle their Nazi attackers. Many Jews and a few Nazis are killed, and some of the Jews who survive manage to flee into nearby forests.
July 22, 1942: German authorities and Ukrainian and Latvian guards in SS uniforms surround the walls of the Warsaw Ghetto. Mass deportations of Jews from Warsaw to the Treblinka death camp begin; personnel at the camp railway station are told to expect a "shuttle service" of Jews.
July 23, 1942: Adam Czerniaków, chairman of the Warsaw Ghetto's Jewish Council, commits suicide rather than acquiesce to German demands to prepare 6000 Jews each day for deportation.
July 23, 1942: SS Senior Colonel General Viktor Brack advises Heinrich Himmler that all healthy Jews should be castrated or sterilized, and the remainder annihilated.
July 22-September 12, 1942: 265,000 Jews are deported from Warsaw to the Treblinka death camp, where they are exterminated.
