The Nazis began the deportation of Hungary's 725,000 Jews, most of them to Auschwitz, in the spring of 1944. In this image of Orthodox men at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the man on the left is Rabbi Naftali Zvi Weiss from the town of Bilke.

In May 1944 this elderly Hungarian woman and her four grandchildren trudged to the Auschwitz gas chambers. The people pictured on this page were among the first of approximately 400,000 Hungarian Jews to perish in Auschwitz.

 May 21, 1944: The Gestapo imprisons all 260 Jews of Canea, Crete, at Rethymnon, Crete.
 May 22-27, 1944: Jews readied for rail transport from Munkács, Ukraine, and from the Hungarian town of Sátoraljaújhely resist being loaded. Some are shot.
 May 25, 1944: At Auschwitz, Hungarian Jews being led to the gas chamber scatter but are shot down by the SS; See May 28, 1944.
 May 27, 1944: Two Jews, Arnost Rosin of Czechoslovakia and Czeslaw Mordowicz of Poland, escape from Auschwitz.
 May 28, 1944: In a repeat of an incident of May 25, Jews being led to the gas chamber at Auschwitz run for nearby woods but are shot down.
 May 29, 1944: Several thousand Jews from Baja, Hungary, arrive at the German frontier after a 31/2-day rail journey; 55 are dead and about 200 are insane.
