Here he makes a speech in the DP camp at Berlin-Schlachtensee. LaGuardia, whose mother was of Jewish descent, made his presentation in Yiddish, something his audience undoubtedly appreciated.

This document, written by the camp's commandant, Rudolf Höss, dated May 14, 1946, attests to the number of Jews murdered at Auschwitz. It reads: "I declare herewith under oath that in the years 1941 to 1943 during my tenure in office as commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp 2 million Jews were put to death by gassing and about 1/2 million by other means." Historians have since concluded that the number of victims at Auschwitz was actually between 1.1 million and 1.6 million.
