Their handshake symbolizing the transfer of power, Hermann Göring (right) confirms Heinrich Himmler as director of the Gestapo, the Secret State Police, in April 1934. When he assumed broader powers as head of all German police in 1936, Himmler in turn passed the torch to Reinhard Heydrich. Begun in Prussia during the Weimar Republic, the Gestapo was intended to protect the security of the state. Under the Nazis, it became a tool of terror, often placing people in Àprotective custodyÀ before sending them to concentration camps.
